Dr. Brandt grew up in Kitchener, Ontario. She went to the University of Waterloo for a degree in Health Sciences with a specialization in Gerontology. Afterwards, she researched improvements to public health and health systems for older adults for two years before attending Western University for Dentistry.

While at Western, she continued to do research, focusing on implementing training programs on geriatric dentistry in dental school. She has several peer reviewed publications, and has been granted the Ontario Dental Association Proficiency Award, the Dr. Paul S. Sills Award in Prosthodontics, and an Ontario Dental Association Research Studentship. Dr. Gordon is now actively involved at Western University as an Adjunct Clinical Faculty member, and is a member of the Ontario Dental Association, the British Society of Prosthodontics, and the Ontario Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. Brandt has learned from experience the importance of building trusting relationships with her patients, which starts with listening to patient concerns, asking the right questions, and making a treatment plan together with the same goals in mind. It is her ultimate goal for patients to have a positive, comfortable experience when visiting the dentist! Let her know how she can make this happen for you.

We specialize in dental care for seniors. Dr. Saari is a specialist in seniors’ dentistry and teaches geriatric dentistry at Western. We provide a full range of services to help seniors maintain good dental health.

Accessibility

Our office is wheelchair accessible and our team can assist patients with mobility issues. We have a special examining room that can accommodate a wheelchair, so you don’t need to leave your chair during your appointment. We also have a remote dental office at Chelsey Park Nursing Home to provide care to residents there.

Your dental health

As you get older, it becomes more important to monitor your dental health. Your gums will naturally recede as you age, which can leave your teeth feeling sensitive. Regular dental exams can help detect and treat problems when they occur, but a daily self exam of your mouth, teeth, and gums is the best way to keep on top of changes in your dental health.

Denture care

We can assess dentures for fit and condition and make adjustments or repairs where needed. For new denture patients we provide denture fitting services.

Caregivers

We can train and assist caregivers to provide oral hygiene and dental care, such as brushing, flossing, and simple dental exams, to seniors. We also work with families and caregivers, including persons with power of attorney, and insurance providers to make the financial aspect of your care as easy as possible.

Oral Hygiene

Your oral hygiene appointment begins with cleaning. Your hygienist will use special tools to completely remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth, including above the gumline where regular brushing can’t reach. We may also recommend a fluoride rinse to give your teeth more protection against cavities.

Dental Exam

Root canal treatment is used to prevent a damaged tooth from being lost. Damage to a tooth can expose its soft inner tissue. This inner tissue, called the pulp, is vulnerable to infection, so exposure can result in a dangerous infection inside your tooth.

If it isn’t detected, the infection can spread to the surrounding gum tissue and could result in the tooth being lost. Root canal treatment saves the tooth by removing the pulp and preventing infection.

How does root canal treatment work?

To remove the pulp, we drill a tiny hole in the tooth and remove the pulp with special instruments. Then we disinfect the inside of your tooth to prevent infection, and seal the hole with a filling. After the root canal, we normally restore the damaged tooth with a dental crown.

Aren’t root canals painful?

For most patients, getting a root canal is similar to getting a tooth filled. The treatment is done under local anesthetic. You may feel sensitivity and soreness in the treatment area for a few days after the procedure.

A frenectomy is the surgical removal of connective tissue in your mouth. Sometimes these tissues, like the one between your upper gums and your upper lip, can be too tight and can cause discomfort. Removal of the tissue eases the discomfort.

Scaling and Root Planing

The gum surrounding the roots of your teeth is vulnerable. Irritants such as tartar or irregularities on the surface of your roots can irritate your gums, which can lead to them becoming infected. Scaling and root planing are treatments we use to remove tartar and smooth the roots of your teeth to prevent irritation.

Extractions

When a tooth is badly damaged and can’t be repaired, it will need to be extracted to prevent damage to your other teeth. Extractions are performed under local anesthetic and we take precautions to prevent post-extraction complications. There are also many possibilities to replace an extracted tooth, including bridges and dental implants.
